Lions UDFA Signings: Finding the Next Kurt Warner or Just More Camp Bodies?

The Lions dive into undrafted free agent season after the draft, signing cornerback De'Shawn Rucker from South Florida and tight end Miles Kitselman from Tennessee as they hunt for roster gems.

The UDFA Hunt Begins

The draft is over, the war room is quiet, and now it’s time for the real treasure hunt. You know the drill by now. The Lions just finished picking their shiny new toys, and now they’re diving headfirst into the chaos that is undrafted free agent season.

This is where Brad Holmes and company have to prove they can spot talent that 32 teams passed on. Seven rounds, hundreds of picks, and these guys are still sitting there waiting for a phone call.

We’ve seen this movie before. Sometimes you find a gem. Sometimes you don’t. But damn if it isn’t fun to pretend every UDFA signing is the next Kurt Warner.

The Early Haul

So far, the Lions have grabbed two players trying to punch their ticket to Allen Park. Here’s who’s fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster:

De’Shawn Rucker, CB, South Florida – A cornerback. Because of course it’s a cornerback. The Lions can never have enough guys who can cover receivers, and Rucker just helped South Florida beat Florida. That’s something, right?

Miles Kitselman, TE, Tennessee – Another tight end to throw into the mix. The Lions love their tight end depth, and Kitselman is coming out of a program that knows how to develop players for the next level.

The Numbers Game

Look, we all know how this works. These guys are going to show up to camp, work their asses off, and most of them are going to get cut. That’s just the reality of professional football.

But every once in a while, someone makes it. Someone finds a way to stick around and contribute. Hell, maybe even become something special.

The Lions walked out of the draft feeling pretty good about their haul, with some players already looking at potential starting roles. Now it’s time to see if they can find lightning in a bottle with the guys nobody else wanted.

Think any of these UDFAs actually make the roster, or are we just setting ourselves up for disappointment again? Drop your hot takes below.

I love the Kurt Warner reference because honestly that’s the dream, right? You never know who’s gonna walk in and just be that guy. Rucker and Kitselman both have real shots to surprise people if they get the right coaching. Brad Holmes knows what he’s doing, so I’m staying optimistic about these signings.

Look, I want to believe just like everyone else, but how many times have we gotten excited about UDFAs only to watch them disappear in September? I’ll wait and see what actually happens when camp starts before I get my hopes up too high.

This is exactly what it used to be like back in the day when you had to really dig to find talent. I respect the hustle, and you gotta have that depth. Just hoping these guys show up ready to work because that’s what separates the starters from the practice squad guys.
