The Tim Patrick Trade Finally Comes Full Circle
Well, well, well. Draft weekend is here, and you know what that means. Time to find out how those sneaky little future picks we’ve been sitting on actually pan out. Remember that Tim Patrick trade from August? The one where we shipped off the veteran wideout to Jacksonville for what felt like pocket change at the time?
Yeah, that 2026 sixth-round pick just became a player.
What We Actually Got
The Lions used Jacksonville’s 2026 sixth-round pick to select Texas Tech defensive tackle Skyler Gill-Howard with the 205th overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. A big body for the trenches with that pick. Not exactly flashy, but Brad Holmes has shown he can find gems in the later rounds.
And yes, I know what you’re thinking. A sixth-rounder for a veteran receiver? At the time, it felt like we were getting fleeced again.
How Tim Patrick Fared in Jacksonville
Turns out Jacksonville didn’t exactly strike gold either. Patrick caught just 15 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns in 2025. Those were career lows for the former undrafted receiver out of Utah.
The Jaguars didn’t even bother re-signing him after his 2025 campaign ended. So much for that investment.
Who Actually Won This Deal?
Right now? We did. Patrick’s gone from Jacksonville, and we’ve got a developmental defensive lineman to show for it. But let’s pump the brakes on the victory lap for a minute.
The real test comes down to whether Skyler Gill-Howard can actually contribute in Honolulu Blue. Late-round picks are lottery tickets, and we’ve all seen our share of those come up empty over the years. Holmes and company need to develop this kid if they want to call this trade a true win.
Still, trading away a receiver who couldn’t crack 200 yards elsewhere for any draft pick feels like house money at this point. Sometimes the best trades are the ones where you just don’t lose.

This is exactly the kind of move I love seeing from Holmes. We basically turned nothing into a shot at a defensive lineman in the later rounds. Jacksonville got burned hard, and that’s honestly hilarious to see happen to someone else for once.
Look I get the optimism but let’s be real, a sixth rounder is still a sixth rounder. Yeah Patrick wasn’t great in Jacksonville but we’ve whiffed on plenty of late picks before. This feels like we’re celebrating not losing rather than actually winning something.
I’ve been watching this team for way too long to get excited about sixth round picks, even if the trade technically looks good on paper. But I gotta say, seeing Jacksonville get stuck with nothing while we got something out of it? That does bring a smile to my face.
Skyler Gill-Howard could be a nice piece for the line if Holmes develops him right. The fact that Patrick basically fell off a cliff in Jacksonville makes this look even better. I’m feeling good about where this one ended up for us.
