The Lions Have Already Worked With This UFL Edge Rusher Before
The Lions still have a few roster spots open and they’re doing things differently this offseason. No tryouts at rookie minicamp this time around. They might invite some players for a look at mandatory minicamp, but more likely they’re keeping spots open for training camp to bring in UFL players like they always do.
Because let’s be honest, the Lions love mining the UFL for talent. The roster currently has four former UFL players: Jake Bates, Nick Whiteside, Jacob Saylors, and Thomas Gordon.
There’s a guy tearing it up at edge rusher in the UFL right now who could give Detroit some depth. And here’s the kicker – they already know him.
Cam Gill Is Dominating the UFL After Lions Practice Squad Stint
Lions fans might remember Gill from his brief practice squad stint during the 2024 season before the Panthers poached him for their active roster. Classic.
Gill has been bouncing around the NFL since 2020 and helped the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl in his rookie year. He had a sack on Patrick Mahomes in that game and forced a fumble. Most of his 50 regular season games have been special teams work with stops in Carolina and Minnesota.
He didn’t play in the NFL in 2025 and signed with the Kings for the 2026 spring season. In six games, he’s racked up 27 pressures and a league-leading 6.5 sacks. He’s in the running for Defensive Player of the Year.
Nobody’s saying Gill would start for Detroit. But he can compete for depth with his pass-rush ability and decent run-stopping skills. The Lions brought eight edges into camp last year. Right now they have seven. Why not grab one more, especially one they already know can handle the system?
Think the Lions bring back a familiar face who’s dominating the UFL, or are we reading too much into this? Drop your take below.
