Brad Holmes Just Got Another Free Roster Spot Thanks to the NFL’s Gift to Detroit

Brad Holmes Gets Another Gift From The League Office

The NFL just handed the Lions an extra roster spot, and honestly, we’ll take all the help we can get. Ahmed Hassanein, the sixth-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft with one hell of a journey from Egypt to Allen Park, is getting his international roster exemption renewed.

Here’s how this works. Hassanein gets the exemption even though he wasn’t technically an International Pathways Player because the league counts his third year of American high school football as a COVID lost year. Fair enough.

What this means for Detroit is simple math that works in our favor. The Lions get a 91st roster spot during training camp, which opens up additional flexibility right now. If Hassanein ends up on the practice squad, that becomes a 17th spot there instead.

More Room To Work With

Detroit had three open roster spots coming into this week and now has four. That’s not earth-shattering news, but it’s the kind of small advantage that Brad Holmes has consistently turned into something useful.

There are still veterans and undrafted free agents floating around out there. The Lions haven’t announced all their UDFA signings yet, so we know about nine of them but there could be more coming.

Look, an extra roster spot isn’t going to transform the franchise. But in a league where every advantage matters, especially for a team that’s still building depth after years of roster reconstruction, this is exactly the kind of break you take and run with.

Think Holmes is done wheeling and dealing this offseason, or is there another move brewing that nobody sees coming? Sound off below.

Holmes just keeps finding ways to get creative with the roster and I’m here for it. Every little edge helps when you’re trying to build something real, and this is exactly the kind of thing that separates good front offices from great ones.

I mean, an extra roster spot is cool and all, but let’s see if it actually translates to meaningful moves. Holmes has been good so far but I’m not gonna celebrate a technicality until it actually helps us win games.

You know, it’s nice to see the organization getting breaks from the league instead of always fighting an uphill battle like we used to. This feels like the kind of thing that would’ve never happened in the old days, and I’m glad we got competent people running things now.

Hassanein’s story is pretty wild honestly, and I’m curious to see if he makes an impact. But either way, having more flexibility is always good when you’re still building out your depth like we are.
