Vikings Come Calling for Lions AGM Ray Agnew and It’s About Damn Time Someone Did

The Minnesota Vikings have requested permission to interview Lions assistant general manager Ray Agnew for their GM opening, marking his first interview request despite helping build championship programs in LA and Detroit.

Here we go again. The Minnesota Vikings have requested permission to interview Lions assistant general manager Ray Agnew for their general manager opening, and honestly, this one was inevitable.

When the Vikings fired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah back in January, you had to know they’d come sniffing around the NFC North for talent. And when you’re looking for front office competence in this division, there’s really only one place to start.

Ray Agnew Finally Gets His Shot

The fact that Agnew isn’t already running a franchise somewhere is genuinely baffling. This is a guy who helped build two of the best programs in the league.

He was the Rams’ director of pro personnel during their climb to two Super Bowl appearances and one championship. Yes, he was already in Detroit when they actually won it all in 2021, but his fingerprints were all over that roster. Same with Brad Holmes.

In Detroit, he’s been Holmes’ right hand in transforming this franchise from one of the worst franchises in the league into perennial Super Bowl contenders. And yes, they’re still contenders, despite what the doom-and-gloom crowd wants you to believe.

Why Now?

This is reportedly the first interview request Agnew has received, which makes absolutely no sense. The only explanation is that he’s older than most GMs, and teams keep chasing these young hotshot executives who have been working their way up the ladder instead of proven builders.

That’s ridiculous, but it’s also the NFL’s loss and potentially Minnesota’s gain.

The Vikings are casting a wide net with their search, so this might not go anywhere. They probably won’t make a decision until later in the month or in June. But if Agnew does leave Allen Park, that’s a significant loss for the Lions’ front office operation.

Think Ray Agnew is ready to run his own show, or should he stay put and keep building something special in Detroit? Let me know in the comments.
