Here we go again. The Minnesota Vikings have requested permission to interview Lions assistant general manager Ray Agnew for their general manager opening, and honestly, this one was inevitable.
When the Vikings fired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah back in January, you had to know they’d come sniffing around the NFC North for talent. And when you’re looking for front office competence in this division, there’s really only one place to start.
Ray Agnew Finally Gets His Shot
The fact that Agnew isn’t already running a franchise somewhere is genuinely baffling. This is a guy who helped build two of the best programs in the league.
He was the Rams’ director of pro personnel during their climb to two Super Bowl appearances and one championship. Yes, he was already in Detroit when they actually won it all in 2021, but his fingerprints were all over that roster. Same with Brad Holmes.
In Detroit, he’s been Holmes’ right hand in transforming this franchise from one of the worst franchises in the league into perennial Super Bowl contenders. And yes, they’re still contenders, despite what the doom-and-gloom crowd wants you to believe.
Why Now?
This is reportedly the first interview request Agnew has received, which makes absolutely no sense. The only explanation is that he’s older than most GMs, and teams keep chasing these young hotshot executives who have been working their way up the ladder instead of proven builders.
That’s ridiculous, but it’s also the NFL’s loss and potentially Minnesota’s gain.
The Vikings are casting a wide net with their search, so this might not go anywhere. They probably won’t make a decision until later in the month or in June. But if Agnew does leave Allen Park, that’s a significant loss for the Lions’ front office operation.
Think Ray Agnew is ready to run his own show, or should he stay put and keep building something special in Detroit? Let me know in the comments.

Finally someone is recognizing what we’ve known for a while now. Ray Agnew deserves to be a GM and run his own ship, but man would it hurt to see him walk out that door. What Brad and Ray have built together in Detroit is special and I hate losing any part of it.
I get why people are excited about this, but I’m not gonna panic until something actually happens. Minnesota’s been a mess and I’m not convinced Agnew is gonna want to go there and start over from scratch. Let’s see what he actually does before we talk about losing him.
Man, I’ve been watching this team since the bad old days and I gotta say this front office actually knows what they’re doing. If Agnew leaves that would suck but at least this time we know Brad Holmes can hold it down. That’s the difference between now and the disasters we lived through before.
