Jerry Jacobs Calls It a Career
Former Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs hung up his cleats this week, announcing his retirement from football at 28 years old. The undrafted corner out of Arkansas spent three seasons in Honolulu Blue before his NFL journey came to an end.
Jacobs posted his farewell on social media Tuesday, thanking God, his mother, and his sisters for pushing him into the game that would define his life. “I can finally feel complete about how my football story even went,” he wrote. “Football taught me how to be a man on and off the field and to be a better person.”
The kid made 40 appearances for Detroit, starting 29 games after going undrafted in 2021. His best season came in 2023 when he picked off three passes, recorded 55 tackles, and defended eight more.
Detroit chose not to bring him back. He signed with the Rams, got cut, then headed north to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL. Sometimes that’s just how it goes in this league.
“I always knew it would come to an end one day but never thought I’ll be making this post this soon but I know it’s time,” Jacobs wrote. “Retirement is not the end of the road. It is the beginning of the open highway.”
Around the Pride
Detroit sports lost a voice when longtime columnist Pat Caputo passed away after battling pancreatic cancer. The Metro Detroit sports personality left behind decades of coverage and one final column he wrote specifically to be shared after his death.
Mother’s Day brought out the best in Lions social media, with players sharing heartfelt tributes to the women who raised them. Jared Goff went sentimental while Kerby Joseph chose the ride-or-die approach. Both nailed it.
Speaking of relationships, Brad Holmes continues to show why his players run through walls for him. The Lions shared a throwback of the GM presenting Penei Sewell with traditional Hawaiian leis in honor of AANHPI Heritage Month. Those little gestures matter more than most people realize.
Amon-Ra St. Brown sat down with ESPN’s Eric Woodyard and made it clear that the Lions’ disappointing season still doesn’t sit well with him. The star receiver said his motivation is at an all-time high. Good. It should be.
The UFL made waves this week by interviewing a referee immediately after a controversial no-call, letting him explain his decision in real time. Imagine if the NFL had the stones to try something like that. We can dream.
Is Jerry Jacobs the kind of undrafted gem we’ll look back on fondly, or just another guy who came and went? Drop your thoughts below.
