Vikings Pass on Lions’ Ray Agnew for GM Job – Detroit’s Front Office Stays Stacked

The Minnesota Vikings passed on interviewing Lions assistant GM Ray Agnew for their general manager position, keeping another talented Detroit executive in Allen Park where he's helped build the best front office this franchise has ever had.

Another Division Rival Passes on a Detroit Lions Executive. Their Loss.

Ray Agnew confirmed Friday what we already knew: the Minnesota Vikings interviewed him for their general manager position this offseason and decided to pass. The Lions assistant general manager spoke at the Meijer Performance Center during OTAs and made it clear he was grateful for the opportunity while staying focused on what’s in front of him in Allen Park.

“I’m very, very satisfied and happy here in my job here. I love working with the group we have here, but I was excited about the opportunity,” Agnew said. “Do I want to be a GM? I think you asked that question. Yes I do. So, excited about the opportunity, but I’m excited about being here also.”

Detroit Lions Gear

Agnew confirmed he’s no longer in the running for Minnesota after the Vikings hired former Seahawks assistant GM Nolan Teasley for the position. Just another NFC North team sleeping on Detroit talent.

Agnew followed Brad Holmes from Los Angeles to Detroit in 2021, where he served as director of pro personnel with the Rams before being promoted to assistant general manager with the Lions. He’s held that role for the past five seasons now and has been part of the front office rebuild that has turned this franchise into something we can actually be proud of.

The Vikings Made Their Choice. The Lions Keep Their Talent.

When asked what he needs to do to make the jump to NFL general manager, Agnew kept it real: “I can’t answer that. Some team would have to answer that question for you what I need. Obviously, I didn’t have what they were looking for, but I’m excited, happy where I’m at.”

That’s the right attitude. Agnew has been wherever his feet are at, as he put it, and right now those feet are planted firmly in Allen Park working alongside the best front office this franchise has ever had.

The Vikings can have their new hire. The Lions get to keep an executive who has been part of building something special in Detroit. Sometimes the best moves are the ones other teams don’t make.

Do you think Agnew deserves a GM shot somewhere or should he keep building what we have here? Drop your take below.
