The Jahmyr Gibbs Era Has Officially Arrived
Fantasy football players, rejoice. The Detroit Lions are about to unleash Jahmyr Gibbs in ways we’ve only dreamed of. After years of splitting carries and managing workloads, Dan Campbell just made it official: Gibbs is the bell cow now.
“He’s going to be our bell cow now. He really became more of that last year, but we’re going to hang our hat on him quite a bit,” Campbell said during OTAs. Translation? The kid gloves are off.
And honestly, it’s about damn time. Gibbs set a career-high with 320 touches (243 rushes, 77 catches) last year, played the most snaps of his three-year career (737), and earned his third straight Pro Bowl trip. With David Montgomery traded this offseason after requesting a trade, the path is cleared for Gibbs to take that next step into true elite territory.
Campbell Knows What He Has
Here’s what should get Lions fans excited: Campbell isn’t just handing Gibbs a bigger workload because he has to. He’s doing it because Gibbs can handle literally everything they want to throw at him.
“He can run everything that we’ve got. He can run every scheme that anybody’s ever run,” Campbell said. “He’s not just an outside runner. He is not just a space runner. He can create his own space in the middle.”
That versatility is the difference between a good back and a great one. Gibbs has already shown he can break off chunk plays on gap schemes right down the pipe, not just the pretty outside zone runs that make highlight reels.
Gibbs Ready for the Challenge
The best part? Gibbs isn’t sweating the increased responsibility one bit. When asked about taking on the full workload, his response was classic: “It’s not nothing I’m not used to.”
Growing up, he was always the guy carrying the load. Now he gets to do it at Ford Field with a championship-caliber offensive line and a coaching staff that finally trusts him completely.
His focus for this offseason is simple: consistency week to week. Which, if we’re being honest, is about the only thing left for him to improve on.
New Coordinator, Same Plan
Drew Petzing, the new offensive coordinator, is already thinking about how to maximize what Gibbs brings to the table. And the ceiling? There isn’t one.
“I don’t think there’s necessarily a ceiling or a cap on what that could look like,” Petzing said. “But I think that’s going to be dictated a lot by the people around them and how the pieces all fit together.”
Translation: They’re going to build the offense around what Gibbs does best, not force him into a predetermined role. That’s smart coaching.
Pacheco Provides Insurance
The Lions did sign Isiah Pacheco to help fill Montgomery’s role, and Gibbs is already impressed with what the former Chiefs seventh-round pick brings to the room.
“A lot of juice. He’s very energetic,” Gibbs said. “He plays really hard. He wants to do anything for the team that Dan calls him to do.”
Having reliable depth means they can ride Gibbs without worrying about running him into the ground. Smart roster construction by Brad Holmes once again.
This is officially the Jahmyr Gibbs show in Honolulu Blue, and frankly, it’s been a long time coming. The kid has earned this opportunity, and now he gets to prove he belongs in the conversation with the best backs in the league.
