UDFA Luke Altmyer Getting Brock Purdy Comparisons Already – Could Lions Have Another Steal?

Luke Altmyer Is Already Making Noise in Allen Park

Just a couple weeks into OTAs and Lions UDFA quarterback Luke Altmyer is already turning heads. The early buzz around the building has some people throwing around Brock Purdy comparisons, which should tell you everything about how this kid has looked so far.

Look, we all know this is still pajama party football. No pass rush, no real pressure, just shorts and helmets. But Altmyer is showing the coaching staff something that matters more than arm strength right now: his mind is in the right place.

“I think the emphasis is very similar to what we just talked about with the O-line. How quickly can you pick it up?” offensive coordinator Drew Petzing said. “You’ve got to call the plays, you’ve got to get in and out of the huddle, you’ve got the quarterback position, you’re responsible for the 10 other guys.”

The Brock Purdy Comparison Makes Some Sense

Purdy was the very last player selected in the 2022 NFL Draft and somehow became San Francisco’s starter. The comparison works if you keep it in the right lane: timing, rhythm, getting the ball out on schedule, not trying to be the hero on every snap.

But let’s be real about what we’re looking at here. Purdy didn’t just survive in that mold, he maxed it out. The guy has enough arm, enough mobility, and way more playmaking ability than anyone gave him credit for initially. That’s why it works at the highest level.

Altmyer? He’s more of a stripped-down version of that archetype right now. Smart, safe, probably going to do what the coach asks. But the margin for error is way thinner. The comparison works for style, but outcome could be a whole different conversation.

What’s Actually Realistic Here

Dan Campbell kept it simple when asked about Altmyer: “Yeah, he didn’t lack confidence for sure.” That’s coach speak for ‘this kid isn’t intimidated,’ which matters when you’re an undrafted free agent trying to stick around Ford Field.

The ceiling for Altmyer is beating out Teddy Bridgewater for the backup job. That’s a very tall ceiling to reach. The more likely outcome is convincing the Lions to carry three quarterbacks, which would be a win in itself for an undrafted rookie.

We won’t know what we really have until training camp and preseason games when the lights get brighter. But early returns suggest the Lions might have found another diamond in the rough, even if it’s a smaller diamond than some of us are hoping for.

Think Luke Altmyer has what it takes to make the roster or are we just setting ourselves up for disappointment again? Drop your take below.
