Giovanni Manu’s Make-or-Break Summer: Why This Guard Experiment Could Save His Lions Career

Giovanni Manu is fighting for his Lions roster life as Dan Campbell experiments with moving the struggling former trade-up pick from tackle to guard amid brutal competition for interior line spots.

Manu’s Last Stand at Ford Field

Giovanni Manu is running out of chances, and the Lions know it. The former trade-up pick is getting looks at guard this summer because, let’s be honest, tackle hasn’t worked out the way anybody hoped it would.

This franchise has been damn near perfect with draft picks since Brad Holmes took over. They’ve hit on more All-Pro players than anyone since 2021, and most of their picks stick around in meaningful roles. Then there’s Manu, who feels like he’s still two seasons away from contributing after two seasons.

Detroit Lions Gear

The Lions traded up to get him in the 2024 NFL Draft, and yeah, the hype was real at the time. Teams were bringing him in for visits left and right. There was genuine belief that if Detroit didn’t move up, he’d be gone. But here we are, and it still feels like this summer might be his last shot to prove he belongs.

Campbell’s Experiment at Guard

Dan Campbell laid it out pretty plainly. They’re experimenting with Manu at guard because injuries have created opportunities, and maybe this is where he actually fits.

“That’s some of what this is, let’s experiment a little bit,” Campbell said. “We’ve had a couple of injuries, or the bugs that – maybe a guy that normally would play guard we don’t have, so let’s put him in there, it’s actually kind of worked out good and just see what he looks like at guard.”

Campbell added that they’re still giving him tackle reps, but they want to give him the best opportunity to showcase what he has. Maybe he’s better at guard. They still think tackle, but if he can prove something at guard, that’s good too.

Here’s the thing that actually makes sense: before the Lions drafted him, Manu told media that Detroit had mentioned they were thinking of him at guard. So this isn’t some desperate Hail Mary. It tracks with their original plan.

The Competition Problem

If Manu can nail down guard, he’d make one hell of a mountain in there. The problem? The competition is brutal.

Christian Mahogany, Juice Scruggs, Miles Frazier, Ben Bartch, and Michael Niese are all fighting for spots. Every single one of them has actually played guard before. In the NFL. That’s not exactly the kind of advantage you want to be giving up when you’re already fighting for your roster life.

But maybe that’s exactly what this is about. Maybe this is Manu’s chance to finally land a roster spot by proving he can do something, anything, at the NFL level. Sometimes the best ability is availability, and sometimes that means being willing to move where the team needs you most.

Are we watching Manu’s redemption arc finally start, or is this just delaying the inevitable? Tell us what you think below.
