Lions Could Flip Avonte Maddox in Wild Three-Team Trade That Actually Makes Sense

A three-team trade proposal would send Lions safety Avonte Maddox to New Orleans while bringing defensive tackle Eric Gregory to Detroit in a deal that makes sense for all sides but probably won't happen.

Three-Team Trade Proposal Would Shake Up the Lions Roster

Here’s something you don’t see every day. A three-team trade proposal involving the Lions, Patriots, and Saints that would move pieces around in ways that actually make sense for everyone involved. Which is probably why it will never happen.

Three-team trades in the NFL are about as common as Lions playoff wins in January. The last one went down in 2017. But let’s play this out anyway because the offseason is long and we’ve got time to kill before the schedule drops.

The Trade Proposal

Lions get: DT Eric Gregory and a Patriots 2027 seventh-round pick

Patriots get: OL Caesar Ruiz

Saints get: S Avonte Maddox and a Patriots 2027 sixth-round pick

Short version: Detroit trades away a safety and receives a rotational nose tackle and a late pick. New England gets offensive line help. New Orleans clears cap space and adds defensive back depth.

Why Detroit Does This

The interior defensive line needs another body. Not a star, not a big money starter, just a guy who can rotate in at nose tackle and hold the point without getting embarrassed. Eric Gregory fits that role. The second-year nose tackle had this role in New England and showed that maybe he should have gotten himself drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The seventh-round pick is basically a throw-in. Nice to have. Not changing anyone’s draft board.

Avonte Maddox is the real trade chip here. He’s versatile, he can play safety or corner, and he’s good enough to start at either spot. The problem is depth. If Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph both come back healthy and ready, the Lions suddenly have too many guys for not enough snaps. Thomas Harper, Chuck Clark, and Christian Izien are all holding roster spots. Something has to give.

This trade clears the logjam and fills a need at the same time. Brad Holmes has done this kind of chess move before. Wouldn’t shock me if he’s already had this exact conversation internally.

Why New England Does This

The Patriots are staring down the possibility of starting Alija Vera-Tucker at guard. He hasn’t played since the 2024 season. That’s not a great plan. Caesar Ruiz gives them either a legitimate starter or at minimum a high-level backup. Either way they feel a lot better about the position without giving up much to get there.

Why New Orleans Does This

Cap relief and a versatile defensive back. They move off Ruiz’s contract, get a player who can start at two positions, and don’t have to gut their draft capital to make it happen. It’s a smart move for a team that has spent years in salary cap hell.

Will It Actually Happen?

Probably not. Three-team trades are rare for a reason. Too many moving parts, too many egos, too many things that can fall apart at the last second. But the logic is sound. Detroit fills a rotational need without overpaying. New England shores up the offensive line. New Orleans gets flexibility and depth.

And if Brad Holmes is involved, you never completely rule anything out. The man has pulled off weirder moves before.

So do we trust Holmes to flip a safety into a nose tackle and call it a win, or are we still gun-shy from the Matt Millen days when every trade felt like a hostage situation? Drop your take below.
