Which Lions “Breakout” Was Fake? Harper, Whiteside, and Frazier Ranked by Trust Level

Three Lions depth players got chances last season, but only one breakout looks real, and it's the waiver claim who could be your next starting safety.

Nick Whiteside: The Breakout Probably Wasn’t Real

Whiteside was a UFL pickup last summer. Camp body. Roster filler. The kind of guy you forget about by Week 3.

Except he played well enough in the offseason to make you wonder if maybe there was something there. Then the Lions cut him anyway. Classic Detroit move, right? Except they brought him back later when the secondary turned into a MASH unit.

Detroit Lions Gear

Everyone got hurt. Every cornerback. Every safety. The Lions needed warm bodies on the field, and Whiteside got his shot against Tampa Bay at Ford Field. He played 40 snaps and looked genuinely solid. Good enough that fans started whispering about hidden gems and the Legion of Whom.

Here’s the problem. After that game? Nothing. He played five more games the rest of the season and logged just 11 snaps total. The coaching staff didn’t trust him. They didn’t give him more chances. That tells you everything.

I don’t think Detroit views him as a starter. I don’t think they see a breakout player. He might stick around as a practice squad contributor, and hell, maybe there’s still something there if the injuries pile up again. But I’m not buying it as real. Not yet.

Thomas Harper: The Breakout Was Absolutely Real

Harper was cut by the Raiders after training camp. The Lions claimed him off waivers. He’s 25 years old, which in NFL terms means he’s still figuring it out but not a project anymore.

He started nine games for Detroit and played at a legitimately high level. His Pro Football Focus grade of 77.8 ranked 10th among all safeties in the league. His coverage grade of 75.9 was 11th. When Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch were banged up, Harper stepped in and produced like a starter.

This one is real. I believe it completely.

He played well in his limited time with Las Vegas in 2024, and during the 2025 preseason you could see he had gotten better. The instincts were sharper. The coverage was tighter. This wasn’t a guy getting lucky. This was a player who figured something out.

What makes Harper so valuable is the insurance he provides. If Joseph starts trending downward, Harper is the guy who could trend upward and take that starting spot. If Joseph isn’t ready at the beginning of the year, I think Harper is the starter. Same thing if Branch isn’t cleared and ready to go. Harper starts there for sure.

The Lions found a real one here. That’s what good teams do. They don’t just hit on first rounders. They find the Thomas Harpers of the world and turn them into contributors.

Miles Frazier: Too Early to Tell

I don’t even know if you call this a breakout. Frazier missed training camp with an injury and showed up later in the season. He played 46 total snaps for the Lions. He looked fine. He looked like a guy who missed training camp and a bunch of practices.

His biggest workload came against the Dallas Cowboys. He played 26 snaps. He looked like a guy playing his first NFL game ever, because he was playing his first NFL game ever. A lot of fans wanted him to replace Christian Mahogany and get more reps. That didn’t happen.

I think there’s a possibility Frazier can win the left guard job this summer, but I wouldn’t set that in stone. Mahogany can absolutely win it back. Ben Bartch has a real shot too. I put Frazier right in the middle.

I don’t know if the breakout is real or not. That’s one we’re going to have to keep our eyes on this summer to find out. Training camp is where this gets sorted. Until then, it’s just noise.

So which of these three breakouts do you actually believe in? Is Harper the only real deal, or are you still holding out hope for Whiteside and Frazier? Drop your take below.
