Penei Sewell Got Robbed: Three All-Pros Isn’t Enough for EA’s 99 Club But One Year From a Tight End Is

Penei Sewell has three straight All-Pro selections and is ranked the top offensive lineman by NFL coaches, but Madden 27 still won't put him in the 99 Club while Trey McBride got there after one elite season.

Penei Sewell is a 98 Overall in Madden 27 and That is Genuinely Insulting

The Madden ratings are out and we have a problem. Not a roster problem, not a depth chart problem, but a respect problem that happens to exist inside a video game that somehow still matters more than it should.

Penei Sewell is a 98 overall in Madden 27.

Three straight first-team All-Pro selections. Named the number one offensive lineman in the NFL by coaches and executives who spoke with ESPN. The anchor of the best offensive line in football. And he’s still not in the 99 Club.

I get it. 98 is elite. 98 is incredible. But what exactly does this man have to do?

The Trey McBride Problem

Here’s what makes this sting. Trey McBride had one elite season and shot all the way up to 99. One. McBride was First-Team All-Pro in 2025 and nobody is disputing that he earned it, but one breakout year was enough to crack the club.

Sewell has been the best tackle in football for three consecutive seasons.

Three years of sustained excellence. Three All-Pro nods. Voted number one by the people who actually game plan against him every week. And he’s sitting at 98 while McBride gets 99 after one great year.

Make it make sense.

The 99 Club Feels Incomplete

The full list includes Myles Garrett, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford, Trey McBride, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Ja’Marr Chase. That’s it. Six players.

Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen are the only quarterbacks rated 99. No Patrick Mahomes. I understand Mahomes is coming off an injury but we’re really pretending his body of work doesn’t warrant a 99? The whole thing feels thin.

Jahmyr Gibbs should be in this conversation too. He’s one of the most explosive dual-threat backs in the league and you could make a legitimate case for him pushing toward the top tier. Detroit has assembled one of the most talented rosters in football and the Madden ratings do not reflect that reality.

The 99 Club should probably have at least five more guys on it. Sewell is the most glaring omission but he’s not the only one.

Does Any of This Actually Matter?

Normally I wouldn’t care about Madden ratings. Everyone has opinions on the game itself and whether it’s improved in the last decade or just slapped a new number on the same product. That’s a separate argument.

But the ratings do matter in one specific way. They reflect how the broader football world perceives players. And when that perception is this far off from reality it’s worth calling out.

Sewell has done everything. Three All-Pro selections. Top ranking from the coaches and executives who matter. Anchor role on one of the best offenses in the league. A cornerstone piece on a team that should be competing for championships.

If that resume doesn’t get you to 99 then the criteria is broken or the process is flawed. Either way it’s a problem. Penei Sewell is the best offensive lineman in football and Madden still hasn’t figured that out.

Fix it.

Is Sewell getting disrespected because he plays in Detroit or is this just standard EA incompetence? Let’s hear it in the comments.

Three All-Pro selections should be the golden ticket to 99. Period. Sewell is literally the best at his position and has been for years, so how is he sitting at 98 while one good season gets a tight end there? This team finally has the talent to compete and it’s frustrating when outside recognition doesn’t match what we see on the field every Sunday.

Look, I want to believe Sewell gets 99 soon but let’s not act like EA’s ratings have ever made sense. They’ll probably bump him up next year and everyone will forget this happened anyway. Still, the guy deserves it now based on what he’s doing.

I’ve been watching this team for decades and never thought I’d see an offensive line this dominant anchored by one guy. Sewell is doing things that are special and it kills me that a video game doesn’t respect the work. The fact that we’re actually complaining about talent on this roster instead of just… everything else, that’s how far this team has come.

Honestly McBride earning 99 isn’t the problem, it’s that Sewell isn’t already there. Three straight All-Pro nods should be automatic, and the fact that Campbell and Holmes built an offense with Sewell as the anchor makes this even more disrespecting to what they’ve put together.
