Dan Campbell Stopped Mid-Answer to Make Sure You Know About Khalil Dorsey
You know Campbell is serious about a guy when he literally interrupts himself to bring him up.
At training camp Monday, Campbell was answering a question about the cornerback two battle. He gave the expected names. Rock Ya-Sin is making plays, which tracks because the Lions know what he brings. Ennis Rakestraw is flashing with some inconsistencies, which is exactly what you’d expect from a young corner still figuring it out. Whiteside has been making plays every single day on defense and special teams.
Standard press conference stuff. Campbell moves on to the next question.
And then he stops.
Hold On One Second
Campbell turned back to the reporter who asked the cornerback question and added one more name.
“Hold on one second. The other is Khalil Dorsey. Dorsey looks good. Okay. Dorsey’s making plays too. We look at that cornerback group. We got a pretty good mix here, young players and some guys that have had experience previously. So look, I mean, this thing. We’ll see. I mean, it’s pretty exciting.”
That is not a throwaway comment. Campbell does not circle back to mention depth pieces. He does not stop answering someone else’s question to shout out a special teams guy who is just doing his job.
He does it when he feels like you are about to sleep on someone who deserves attention.
Dorsey Has Been Here Since 2022
Khalil Dorsey has been with the Lions since 2022, mostly as a gunner and special teams contributor. He has been very good at that role. But now it sounds like he is getting a shot to compete for that second starting cornerback job.
If he keeps making plays, you never know.
The cornerback room has some real competition happening. Ya-Sin has experience and trust. Rakestraw has upside but is still raw. Whiteside is making noise every day. And now Dorsey is forcing his way into the conversation.
Campbell said it himself. This is about to get really interesting.
