Teddy Bridgewater retired and now we have to talk about something nobody wants to hear
Teddy Bridgewater walked away from football this week. That’s fine. It happens. He gave us what we needed when we needed it, and no hard feelings there.
But here’s the thing: losing him opened up a conversation that makes every Lions fan immediately uncomfortable. Brad Holmes needs to start thinking about the future at quarterback, and that future might need to arrive sooner than any of us want to admit.
I can already hear the pushback. Jared Goff is our guy. Goff is good. Goff has been damn good, actually. And yes, all of that is true. This is not a hit piece on number sixteen.
But Bridgewater retiring created a depth problem that goes beyond just finding another veteran to hold a clipboard. It exposed the fact that we have Luke Altmeyer, who has been on the roster for two weeks and has not played a single snap of NFL football in an actual game yet. That’s not a contingency plan. That’s a prayer.
The timing lines up whether we like it or not
The elephant in the room is that the 2027 draft class is stacked at quarterback. I mean absolutely loaded in a way we have not seen in years.
Arch Manning from Texas. Dante Moore from Oregon. Julian Sayin from Ohio State. LaNorris Sellers from South Carolina. CJ Carr from Notre Dame. Trinidad Chambliss from Ole Miss. Nico Iamaleava from UCLA. CJ Bailey from NC State. Jayden Maiava from USC. Darian Mensah from Miami. Drew Mestemaker from Oklahoma State. John Mateer from Oklahoma.
That is not a normal draft class. That is a generational haul at the most important position in football, and it is coming at a time when Detroit needs to start planning ahead.
Compare that to what we saw in the 2026 draft: Fernando Mendoza, Ty Simpson, and a whole lot of who the hell knows. The Rams took a shot on Simpson early because they understood what was coming. Holmes might need to do the same thing.
This is not about benching Goff
Let me be crystal clear here because I know how this sounds. Jared Goff should be the starting quarterback for the Detroit Lions for the rest of his contract and maybe longer. He is very, very good at football. Keep him. Extend him if it makes sense. I am not calling for a quarterback controversy.
But he will be 33 during the 2027 season. The Lions have an out in his contract after the 2027 season. And whether we want to think about it or not, eventually you have to have a plan for what comes next. You do not want to be scrambling when the time comes.
Bridgewater just retired with no warning. Now what? You cannot throw Altmeyer out there. He has almost no experience in the NFL. He is a third-string quarterback who has been here for two weeks. That is not depth, that is desperation waiting to happen.
The blueprint already exists
If the Lions draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft, that player sits behind Goff and develops. He learns the system. He gets his reps in practice. And when the time comes, whether that is in two years or four years, you have someone ready to step in who was built for this offense and this culture.
Think about what Green Bay did with Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. Think about what Kansas City did with Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes. This is how you do it when you have the chance.
Goff will be 33 in 2027 and 34 in 2028, which is the last year of his contract as we know it today. I expect some sort of restructuring or extension at some point because as long as he can play, there is no reason he should not be here. Hell, he could easily take this thing until around 2030 when he’d be 36.
But you have to start thinking about the contingency plan now. The 2027 draft is that plan. We have a long way to go before then and a full season to play, but Detroit should go get their quarterback and not wait around to see what happens when Goff’s contract winds down.
I could see them going the Rams route. Let’s see what happens.
