Dan Campbell Serves Cold Reality Check on Rams Super Bowl Hype
The Los Angeles Rams just made the kind of blockbuster move that sends the talking heads into overdrive. They shipped off Jared Verse plus a future first, second, and third-round pick to Cleveland for Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. Within hours, half the NFL analysts in America were ready to hand LA the Lombardi Trophy.
Dan Campbell? Not so much.
“I mean good for them. I mean, they’ve won it now, right?” Campbell said with the kind of deadpan delivery that makes you remember why this man is perfect for Detroit.
Look, Campbell gave Garrett his due. The guy is a hell of a player, and Campbell said as much. But the broader point stands: nobody has won anything yet. It’s May. The games are played on grass, not on ESPN’s trade reaction shows.
Drew Petzing Knows What’s Coming
Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing had a different perspective, having worked with Garrett in Cleveland from 2020-22. He’s seen the violence up close.
“I saw it firsthand, he’s a great player,” Petzing said. “Kind of like the guys we talked about on this offense, I don’t know if there’s a weakness in his game. He does so many things at such a high level, plays with such violence, so great player.”
Then Petzing dropped the line that should get Lions fans fired up: “I know right now he’s not on the schedule, so I hope we’re playing him this year.” Translation: bring your Super Bowl favorites to Ford Field in January. We’ll see how that works out for you.
The Arms Race Question
Naturally, someone asked Campbell what it would take for Detroit to make their own “all-in” move like the Garrett trade. His response was peak Campbell: “Well, I guess I would tell you when that time happens.”
Safe to say he really didn’t want to talk about this topic. And honestly? Good. This is the same coach who has consistently preached that the Lions are focused on themselves, not what other teams are doing. That approach has worked pretty well so far.
The Rams can have their headlines and their hype. Detroit will keep building, keep grinding, and keep doing things the way that got them here. When playoff time comes around, we’ll see who actually wins something.
Think Campbell’s got the right approach here, or should the Lions be making their own splash moves? Let me know what you think below.
