Dan Campbell Just Made Every Lions Fan Breathe Again
Training camp opened at the Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park and Dan Campbell did us all a favor. He gave us actual good news about Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph instead of the vague injury coach-speak we’ve been conditioned to expect from this franchise over the years.
Both safeties are on the PUP list. That much we knew. What we didn’t know is how bad things really were or how long we’d be without two of the best safeties in the league.
Now we know. And honestly? It’s better than anyone had a right to hope for.
Kerby Joseph Is Grinding
Campbell said everything he mentioned in the spring still applies. Joseph is running on the ground, changing direction, and working his tail off. He hasn’t taken a vacation. He’s been at the facility putting in the work.
The coach was careful to say there’s still an unknown, that they’re not going to grind through this for weeks just to check a box. But he likes where Joseph is at. The team likes where he’s at.
Translation: they’re being smart about this, not desperate. Joseph might feel ready to go, but the Lions aren’t rushing him back until they absolutely need him. That’s the kind of decision-making you get from a front office and coaching staff that knows what they’re doing.
This is not the old Lions. This is Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell protecting their assets instead of burning them out in July.
Brian Branch Could Be Back Sooner Than Anyone Thought
Here’s where it gets really good.
Campbell said Branch is doing well. No setbacks. They’ll take it as it comes, but he could start practicing late in training camp or maybe early September.
That’s huge. That’s not a guy who’s going to miss half the season. That’s a guy who might be back for Week 2 or Week 3 if things break right. If he starts practicing late in training camp instead of early September, the Lions could have their safety back in the rotation before anyone expected.
This Is What Competence Looks Like
The Lions are managing injuries the right way. They’re not panicking. They’re not throwing guys out there before they’re ready just because it’s training camp and the media wants answers.
Campbell’s been honest about the timelines. The medical staff is doing their jobs. Holmes built a roster deep enough that losing two starting safeties for a few weeks in the summer doesn’t crater the entire defense.
This is what it looks like when the people running your franchise actually know what they’re doing. It’s still weird to say that out loud as a Lions fan, but it’s true.
Do we miss the first day of training camp with both Branch and Joseph sidelined? Sure. But if the tradeoff is getting them both back healthy and ready to ball out when it actually matters, that’s a deal you take every single time.
