The Last Stand for a Trade-Up Pick Gone Wrong
Giovanni Manu is running out of chances, and the Lions know it. The former trade-up pick is getting looks at guard this offseason because honestly, what else are they going to do with him at this point?
Let’s be real about what happened here. The Lions don’t whiff on draft picks very often under Brad Holmes. They’ve drafted more All-Pro players since 2021 than anyone else in the league. But Manu? Yeah, this one stings a little.
They traded up to get him in the 2024 NFL Draft. At the time, the hype was legitimate. Teams were bringing him in for visits left and right, and there was real belief that if Detroit didn’t move up, they weren’t getting their guy. After two seasons, it still feels like he’s two seasons away from contributing anything meaningful.
Campbell Sees This as Manu’s Shot
Dan Campbell isn’t giving up on the big man just yet. He’s been experimenting with Manu at guard this summer, partly out of necessity with some injuries, partly out of hope that maybe a position change unlocks something.
“That’s some of what this is, let’s experiment a little bit,” Campbell said. “So he’s still getting tackle reps, we’re seeing — we’re trying to give him the best opportunity to showcase what he has and who knows? Maybe he is better at guard.”
Here’s the thing though. Before Manu was drafted, he told media that the Lions had already mentioned guard as a possibility. So this isn’t some desperate Hail Mary. It’s going back to an original idea that maybe makes more sense now than it did then.
If he can nail it down, Manu would make for one hell of a guard. The size is there. The athleticism is there. The question has always been whether the football instincts would catch up.
The Competition is Brutal
But let’s not pretend this is a cakewalk. The competition at guard right now is stiff. Christian Mahogany, Juice Scruggs, Miles Frazier, Ben Bartch, and Michael Niese are all fighting for spots. They all have something Manu doesn’t: actual NFL experience at the position.
This might be his last real shot to stick on the roster. Campbell won’t say it that bluntly, but we all know what time it is. Either Manu figures it out this summer or the Lions move on. Simple as that.

I’m genuinely optimistic about this. Campbell’s willingness to experiment and not just give up on guys is exactly what I want to see. If moving Manu to guard was already discussed before the draft, then maybe it just makes sense now with fresh eyes. The athletic tools are there, so why not see if a position change clicks for him?
Look, I appreciate Campbell’s patience and I get trying to find a role for him, but we also can’t ignore reality. The guard room is loaded right now and Manu’s got to actually show something at this point. I’m hoping it works out but I’m not holding my breath either.
You know what I like about this era? They’re not just cutting bait on guys the way things used to be. Campbell and Holmes actually believe in developing talent and aren’t afraid to adjust course. That’s the kind of thinking that was missing for way too long around here.
The fact that they mentioned guard as an option before the draft and are circling back to it makes sense. Campbell clearly sees something he wants to unlock. I’ve got faith in this coaching staff to figure out where Manu fits best, and if he can become a solid guard, that’s a win for everyone.
