Jahmyr Gibbs Keeps His Mouth Shut About His Money

Jahmyr Gibbs is about to get paid. We all know it. Brad Holmes knows it. The salary cap knows it. Hell, even Gibbs knows it, but he’s smart enough to keep his mouth shut and let his agent do the talking.

After Thursday’s OTA practice in Allen Park, reporters asked Gibbs the obvious question: does he want a contract extension locked up before the 2026 season starts? His answer was about as vanilla as it gets for a guy who’s about to reset the running back market.

“Really, I’m just letting my agent, Brad (Holmes) and all them do that right now,” Gibbs said. “I’m just worried about the team and ball. I’m just trying to hoop right now.”

Smart kid. Let the suits handle the numbers while you handle the football.

The Market Is Already Moving

Running backs have been cashing in this offseason. De’Von Achane got four years and $64 million from Miami. Breece Hall pulled three years and $45.75 million from the Jets. But those deals are just the appetizer.

The main course is Gibbs and Falcons back Bijan Robinson, who were drafted just four picks apart in 2023 and have been putting up monster numbers since day one. Robinson went eighth overall, Gibbs went 12th, and both have been worth every penny.

The stats tell the story. Robinson has 805 rushes for 3,910 yards and 25 touchdowns, plus 198 catches for 1,738 yards and 9 scores. Gibbs has been even better: 675 rushes for 3,580 yards and 39 touchdowns, with 181 catches for 1,449 yards and 10 touchdowns. That 5.3 yards per carry average? Yeah, that’s special.

Let the Agents Do the Talking

When reporters pushed Gibbs about whether he wants to be the highest-paid back in the league or if he’s watching Robinson’s negotiations, he punted again.

“I don’t really pay attention to all that stuff,” Gibbs said. “Like I said to him, I just want to hoop right now. I’ll let my agent and Brad do all of that, or whoever does it up there, I don’t know. I’ll just let them do that, and I’ll be out here.”

This is the right approach. Keep your head down, stay focused on football, and let the business folks handle the business. Brad Holmes has already locked up Jack Campbell with a four-year, $81 million extension earlier this offseason, and he’s publicly said he wants to extend Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, and Brian Branch from that 2023 draft class.

With LaPorta and Branch still rehabbing from injuries, Gibbs is next in line. Dan Campbell has already declared him the bellcow back for this season, which means more touches, more responsibility, and yes, more money coming his way.

But Gibbs isn’t changing his approach just because he’s about to become the featured back. “I’m always excited. I love playing football. It’s been what I’ve been doing it since I was eight,” he said. “So, yeah, I’m always excited every year.”
