Lions at Pick 17: Why Brad Holmes Is About to Shock Everyone on Draft Night

The Detroit Lions are positioned perfectly at pick 17 to make a bold draft night trade move up the board in a chaotic first round lacking elite talent.

Detroit Lions Could Make First-Round Move From No. 17 Pick

Draft night trades are coming, Lions fans. They always do.

The middle and latter portions of the first round is shaping up to be a game of musical chairs this year. Teams are expected to be wheeling and dealing all over the board, and guess what? The Lions are sitting right in the thick of it at pick 17.

Here’s the thing about this draft: it’s not exactly loaded with can’t-miss, franchise-changing talent at the top. When the elite prospects are thin, teams get antsy. They start making moves.

And yes, I know what you’re thinking. The Lions trading up? That could go a million different ways, and we’ve seen most of them end badly over the years. But this front office isn’t the same group that reached for guys nobody else wanted.

The beauty of sitting at 17 is having options. You can stay put and grab solid value, or you can package that pick with something else and go hunting for a player you really want. In a year where teams are expected to be dancing around the draft board, having a first-round chip to play with isn’t the worst position to be in.

The lack of top-tier prospects means there’s probably going to be some talented players sliding down the board further than expected. That creates opportunities. That creates chaos. And in the chaos, smart teams make their moves.

Whether Brad Holmes pulls the trigger on something big remains to be seen. But don’t be shocked if draft night gets interesting for the Lions. In a year where movement is expected throughout the first round, sitting at 17 puts Detroit right in the sweet spot to make something happen.

Are we ready to watch Holmes wheel and deal his way up the board, or should we just stay put and take whatever falls to us? Let me know in the comments.

I love the energy here. Holmes has shown he knows what he’s doing so far, and having that flexibility at 17 is huge. If there’s chaos on draft night like the article says, why not be the team that takes advantage of it?

I want to believe this, but I’ve been hurt before by moves at the draft. Let me see Holmes execute this before I get too excited about him wheeling and dealing. Staying put and getting a solid player feels safer to me right now.

The difference between this front office and the ones I’ve watched over the decades is night and day. Back then we’d reach for guys nobody wanted and it killed us. At least now there’s a plan and some intelligence behind the moves.
