Lions Fans, Brace Yourselves: Derrick Moore’s Contract Could Drag Into July Just Like Last Year’s Mess

Lions second-round pick Derrick Moore's contract signing could drag into July as NFL teams and agents play the fully guaranteed money game that delayed Tate Ratledge last season.

Here We Go Again With The Rookie Contract Drama

The draft is over, the grades are in, and now comes the part that makes your eye twitch if you’ve been around long enough. Getting these rookies signed before training camp. Simple, right? Well, not if you’re dealing with second-round pick Derrick Moore.

This isn’t about Moore being greedy or his agent being difficult. This is about the NFL’s newest annoying trend that could leave the Lions playing the waiting game again.

Remember The Tate Ratledge Circus?

Cast your mind back to last year when the Lions didn’t get Tate Ratledge signed until July 17th. Training camp started three days later. Three days. That wasn’t a Ratledge problem or even a Lions problem.

That was an entire second round of the 2025 NFL Draft problem.

The holdup started when Houston and Cleveland decided to give Jayden Higgins and Carson Schwesinger fully guaranteed contracts. Suddenly every agent in the second round started sniffing around to see if their guy could get the same deal. Classic domino effect.

Ratledge didn’t get the fully guaranteed money in the end, but everyone had to wait for Seattle to make their move with Nick Emmanwori. They caved and gave him the guarantee, which started the chain reaction. New England did it with TreVeyon Henderson. Miami did it with Jonah Savaiinaea.

Why Moore Could Be Stuck In The Same Mess

Here’s the thing about NFL trends. They don’t shrink, they grow. And once again, multiple players who were expected to go in the first round slipped into the second.

Their agents are absolutely going to try this fully guaranteed contract angle again. Keep an eye on Houston with Kayden McDonald, Cleveland with Denzel Boston, Cincinnati with Cashius Howell, and Miami with Jacob Rodriguez.

Moore fits right into that group because this is how it works now. Some teams will cave and guarantee the deal, while other teams sit there with their thumbs up their asses waiting to see what happens next. If one domino falls, agents start working the phones trying to get the same deal for their clients.

It doesn’t mean they’ll get it, but it absolutely means your guy might not be signed until July while everyone plays this stupid game.

The New Reality Of Second Round Contracts

For years, teams refused to fully guarantee second-round contracts. Now it’s trending toward some teams being willing to do it. Eventually, all teams will do it and this will be standard procedure.

Until then, we get to sit through this annual theater where agents hold out hoping the team ahead of them in the draft order sets a precedent they can exploit.

So don’t be shocked if Moore’s signing drags into July. It’s not personal, it’s not about the Lions being cheap, and it’s not about Moore being difficult. It’s just the latest way the NFL has found to make something simple into something complicated.

Are we ready for another summer of “will they or won’t they” with a rookie contract, or is this just the price of doing business now? Let me know in the comments.

Honestly I’m not even stressed about this anymore. Brad Holmes and Campbell know how to manage these situations way better than we’ve seen in the past, so if Moore doesn’t sign til July, I trust there’s a good reason and it’s not because our front office got played. They’ve shown they know what they’re doing.

Yeah okay, but at some point you gotta wonder if the Lions should just get out ahead of this and guarantee the deal early instead of waiting around like everyone else. Why are we always the ones sitting on the sidelines when other teams are setting the market? That part bugs me.

I’ve been watching this team go through every kind of drama you can imagine, and you know what? The fact that our biggest worry right now is when a rookie gets signed is actually kind of refreshing. This front office doesn’t panic and doesn’t get bullied, which is all you can really ask for these days.

Moore’s gonna be fine whenever it happens. The Lions clearly believe in him or they wouldn’t have drafted him, and this whole domino effect thing isn’t new anymore so everyone’s used to it. I’d rather Holmes wait it out than overpay just to make us feel better in June.
