Lions Sign Cedrick Wilson Jr. to Send Brutal Message to Young Receivers

The Lions signed veteran receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. to create competition and push young receivers like Isaac TeSlaa and Jackson Meeks for roster spots.

Lions Add Veteran Receiver to Push Young Guys

The Lions just signed Cedrick Wilson Jr., and honestly, this one’s a head scratcher at first glance. By all accounts, Detroit is pretty well stocked at receiver with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa, Greg Dortch, Kendrick Law, Tom Kennedy, Jackson Meeks, and Dominic Lovett. That’s a solid group. So why add another body?

Wilson is a 30-year-old journeyman who’s been bouncing around since being a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He’s logged 93 regular-season games across stints with the Dolphins, Saints, and Cowboys. Outside of the 2021 season where he caught 45 passes for 602 yards and six touchdowns, he’s mostly been a depth guy putting up around 200 yards per year.

What Wilson Brings to Allen Park

According to Miami beat writer Kyle Crabbs, Wilson is “a quality depth player at this stage of his NFL career.” He’s got size but lacks explosiveness, so don’t expect him to create separation consistently. What he does bring is solid hands, good blocking, and the ability to find soft spots in zone coverage.

Crabbs describes him as “a blue-collar, dirty work receiver” who could handle 15-20 snaps per game as a rotational player and special teams contributor. That’s about as honest an assessment as you’ll get.

The Real Message Here

Here’s the thing that makes this signing click into focus. Wilson’s potential role is essentially the same spot Isaac TeSlaa and Jackson Meeks are fighting for. That X-receiver type role where the ceiling is special teams duty if you even make the 53-man roster.

This is the Lions sending a crystal clear message to the young receivers. Competition doesn’t stop. Nothing is handed to you unless your name is St. Brown or Williams. Everyone else better show up to training camp ready to fight for their spot because there’s a veteran sitting right there ready to take it.

It’s a classic move. Bring in a steady veteran who knows how to be a pro, let him push the younger guys, and see who rises to the challenge. The best man wins, and if Wilson somehow earns a roster spot over a younger player, so be it.

Think this is the Lions being too cutthroat with the young receivers or just smart roster management? Let me know in the comments below.
