Memorial Day Reminder: Lions OTAs Can Wait While We Honor Those Who Gave Everything

A Lions writer reflects on Memorial Day weekend while looking ahead to OTAs and encourages fans to honor those who served our country.

Hey Lions fans.

While Detroit Lions organized team activities (OTAs) start up later this week and we’ll get our first real look at this team, let’s pump the brakes for a minute. It’s Memorial Day, and whether you’re from a military family or not, it’s worth taking a moment to honor the people who have risked everything. And remembering those who gave their lives for this country.

Look, I don’t have much of a military connection myself. You’d have to dig back a few generations to find anyone in my family who served. So I’m not going to pretend I have some deep Memorial Day tradition or special way of honoring service members.

What I’m doing this weekend

Honestly? I’m taking the extended weekend to recharge and relax. And throughout it, I’ll remember that neither of those things would be possible without the sacrifice of others.

I played a couple excellent rounds of disc golf in some of Michigan’s parks that are maintained by dedicated government workers. Had a great dinner with friends. Monday I’ll probably take advantage of this fantastic Michigan weather, spend some time reflecting, and get ready for another week of Lions coverage.

Including our first look at the 2026 squad during one open practice of OTAs. Which, yes, I’m already thinking about because that’s what we do here.

How are you spending your Memorial Day weekend? Are you doing something special to honor those who served, or just taking time to appreciate what we have? Let us know in the comments below.
