Penei Sewell Leading the New-Look O-Line the Right Way
The Lions offensive line looks completely different this season, and frankly, that’s terrifying and exciting in equal measure. After cutting ties with Taylor Decker and Graham Glasgow this spring, Brad Holmes brought in multiple veterans in free agency and used the first round pick on Blake Miller. Now someone has to make this whole thing work.
Enter Penei Sewell, who is handling the leadership role exactly how you’d want him to. The five-year veteran is the elder statesman in a room full of new faces, and he’s not just talking about setting standards — he’s showing up to do the work.
“I’m the one that’s kind of been here the longest in the room, so it’s up to me to really hold that and to really show the guys, not just tell them because that’s the most important — you’ve got to come out here each and every day,” Sewell said at OTAs. “Nobody’s going to follow you if you’re not really doing it yourself.”
That’s the kind of leadership this franchise has been missing for decades. Not the rah-rah nonsense, but the quiet accountability that makes everyone around you better.
Building Chemistry Beyond the Field
Chemistry matters on the offensive line more than anywhere else, and the new guys are already working on it. Cade Mays posted on social media about a hunting trip with Tate Ratledge, and Sewell is game to join them next time.
“I do want to go out there one time,” he said. “I heard it’s a different type of world, but I’m willing to do it all. I was talking to my wife the other day and those types of experiences, some people grow up on them and some people don’t. So it’s one of those things — might as well.”
Look, I don’t care if they’re bonding over hunting, bowling, or competitive origami. Whatever gets this unit clicking together is fine by me. We’ve seen what happens when the offensive line doesn’t gel, and it usually involves Jared Goff running for his life.
Sewell understands that being open to new experiences helps him connect with teammates who come from completely different backgrounds. That’s smart leadership from a guy who could easily coast on his reputation but chooses to meet people where they are.
The fact that Holmes completely overhauled this unit shows he wasn’t satisfied with what he had. That’s either brilliant roster management or a massive gamble. Knowing Holmes’ track record, I’m leaning toward the former, but we won’t know for sure until they’re protecting Goff under the lights at Ford Field.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying – Sewell showing up and doing the work instead of just running his mouth is the foundation everything else gets built on. Holmes knows what he’s doing with this line and Penei being willing to go hunting with guys from different backgrounds shows he actually cares about making this work. I’m feeling really good about this unit.
Look I want to believe in this as much as anyone but we’re talking about a completely new line protecting Goff and we won’t know if it actually works until we’re in real games. Sewell being a good leader is great and all, but good vibes don’t stop pocket collapses. I hope I’m wrong about this.
You know what I appreciate most about this? Holmes and Campbell actually trust their guys enough to shake things up instead of just running the same broken system year after year. Sewell being the steady hand in all this change is exactly what this team needed – reminds me why I actually have hope for the first time in way too long.
Penei wanting to go hunting even though that’s not his world? That’s championship mentality right there. This is a guy who gets that real chemistry doesn’t happen in meetings, it happens when you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone for your teammates. This line is going to be so much better than people think.
