Malcolm Rodriguez Should Be Watching His Back After the Jimmy Rolder Pick
The writing might be on the wall in Allen Park, and Malcolm Rodriguez better be paying attention.
The Lions drafted a linebacker, and suddenly the linebacker room got a lot more crowded. Rodriguez should be feeling the heat. So should Derrick Barnes, for that matter.
Look, we’ve seen this movie before. Young player gets drafted, veterans start sweating, and by the time training camp rolls around, someone’s fighting for their roster life. That’s just the nature of this business.
Rodriguez had his moments, sure. But in a league where you’re only as good as your last play, comfort is a luxury no one can afford. The Lions didn’t spend a draft pick to have a rookie ride the bench and learn the playbook.
Barnes finds himself in the same boat. Competition breeds excellence, or it breeds unemployment. There’s no middle ground in the NFL.
This isn’t about being fair or unfair to guys who’ve put in work. This is about Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell building the best possible roster, and if that means some uncomfortable conversations are coming, well, that’s football.

I get the competitive angle they’re going for but we’ve seen this song and dance before. Guys get drafted and then we wonder why nobody looks comfortable out there. I’m not saying it’s the wrong move, I’m just saying let’s see if it actually works before we act like it solves anything.
Been watching this team for more years than I wanna count and you know what, competition in the middle is important. When you got guys fighting for their lives it brings out the best in people. I like that the front office isn’t just handing anybody anything.
Love this move honestly. Makes the whole room better instantly. Rodriguez has flashed some real talent but he’s gotta know he can’t just coast, and same with Barnes. Now everyone’s gotta come to training camp ready to prove it.
