Mark Your Calendar: Lions Pick 50 Timing Is Predictable as Death and Taxes
The 2026 NFL Draft continues Friday night with Rounds 2 and 3, and for once we can actually predict when the Lions will be on the clock. The San Francisco 49ers kick off Day 2 at 7 p.m. ET, which means we’re about an hour and a half away from hearing Detroit’s name called.
Right now, the Lions have exactly one pick on Day 2. Their original second-round selection sits at 50th overall. Remember those two third-round picks? Yeah, Brad Holmes shipped both of them off in the trade up for receiver Isaac TeSlaa during last year’s draft.
Here’s where things get refreshingly predictable for a franchise that has specialized in chaos for decades. The 50th overall pick has been announced at almost the exact same time for the past four years:
In 2025, Seattle took tight end Elijah Arroyo at 8:29 p.m. ET. In 2024, Washington grabbed cornerback Mike Sainristil at 8:26 p.m. ET. In 2023, Green Bay selected wide receiver Jayden Reed at 8:26 p.m. ET. In 2022, New England picked wide receiver Tyquan Thornton at 8:32 p.m. ET.
So if the Lions stay put at pick 50, expect to hear their selection announced somewhere between 8:25 and 8:35 p.m. ET. Set your watch. Order your pizza accordingly.
The Waiting Game After That
Of course, there’s always a chance Holmes decides to get creative on Day 2. The man has shown he’s not afraid to move around the board when he sees something he likes.
Day 2 typically wraps up around 11 p.m. ET, which means if Detroit stays at pick 50, they’ll be spectators for the final two and a half hours. That’s a long time to sit around wondering if you should have made another move.
But hey, at least we know when to pay attention. In a Lions timeline that has included more surprises than a Detroit pothole season, having one predictable moment feels almost luxurious.
Think Holmes will stand pat at 50 or is he already working the phones for another move? Drop your prediction below and let’s see who called it right.
