The Fake Spike, The Dislocated Shoulder, and The Double Pick-Six: Ranking the Lions’ Greatest Comeback Wins

The Lions have pulled off heart-stopping comeback wins against Cleveland and Dallas that still give fans chills, but which one was the most memorable in franchise history?

What’s the Most Memorable Lions Comeback Win? Let’s Talk About It

Friday night the Pistons pulled off something special. Down 24 points in the second half, facing elimination, they clawed all the way back to force a Game 7 at home. It was the biggest comeback in franchise playoff history and got me thinking about our own Cardiac Cats.

The Lions have had their share of heart-stopping comeback wins, especially in the modern era. So here’s the question: what’s been the most memorable comeback victory in Lions history?

Three That Come to Mind Immediately

The Matthew Stafford rookie year magic against Cleveland has to be in the conversation. Everyone remembers Staff throwing that touchdown to Brandon Pettigrew with a dislocated shoulder on an untimed down. What you might forget is Detroit was down 24-3 in the first damn quarter.

The Lions outscored Cleveland 35-13 the rest of the way. That’s not just a comeback, that’s a complete dismantling after getting punched in the mouth early.

Then there’s the pair of Cowboys games that still make me smile. In 2011, Detroit trailed 27-3 early in the second half before Bobby Carpenter got a 34-yard pick six. Chris Houston added another pick six in the same quarter. Calvin Johnson did Calvin Johnson things twice, and suddenly we had pulled off a miraculous upset that nobody saw coming.

Two years later came the fake spike game in 2013. The Lions were never down more than 10 points, but it’s how they won that makes it legendary. Dallas kicks a field goal with 1:07 left to go up 30-24. Lions have 80 yards to go, no timeouts, and need six to win.

You know the rest. Staff faked the spike and found Calvin in the corner of the end zone with 12 seconds left. Ford Field went absolutely ballistic.

The Beauty of Lions Comebacks

What makes these wins special isn’t just the scoreboard. It’s that they happened during years when we were still clawing our way back from rock bottom. These weren’t playoff teams pulling off miracle finishes. These were Lions teams that had been beaten down for so long that every comeback felt like proof we might actually be building something real.

The Stafford shoulder game was his rookie year. The Cowboys games were during those early Jim Schwartz years when we were just learning how to compete again. Every comeback win felt like validation that maybe, just maybe, we weren’t the same old Lions anymore.

Which Lions comeback win still gives you chills when you think about it? Was it one of these three, or do you have another favorite memory tucked away from the decades of watching this team break your heart and occasionally put it back together?
