The Lions Almost Hired the Wrong Campbell and We Dodged the Biggest Bullet in Franchise History

Matt Campbell initially agreed to be the Detroit Lions head coach before changing his mind and staying at Iowa State, leading to the Lions hiring Dan Campbell instead in what turned out to be a franchise-changing sliding doors moment.

The Big What If

Well, this is a hell of a thing to learn. According to ESPN, Matt Campbell initially agreed to be the Detroit Lions head coach back in 2021 when Brad Holmes was assembling his coaching staff. Campbell, who was running Iowa State at the time, actually said yes before changing his mind and staying put in Ames. The Lions pivoted and hired Dan Campbell instead.

“Leaving Ames wasn’t something that I was looking to do or wanting to do,” Campbell said in the ESPN story.

Detroit Lions Gear

And there it is. The sliding doors moment that Lions fans never knew existed until now.

The Story That Never Made Sense

This clears up what was always a confusing mess of conflicting reports. Right after Dan Campbell got hired, the rumor mill went completely sideways about what actually happened with Matt Campbell.

First we heard that Campbell turned down an eight-year, $68.5 million contract from Detroit. Then a few days later, a conflicting report said the Lions never even made him a formal offer and that his pursuit never went beyond a first interview.

Rod Wood played it coy during Dan Campbell’s introductory press conference, refusing to comment on any college coaches “out of respect for their current position and recruiting.” Classic front office non-answer that told us everything and nothing at the same time.

Now we know the truth was messier than either extreme. Campbell agreed, then changed his mind. Simple as that.

Thank God For Cold Feet

Look, Matt Campbell might be a fine coach. He stayed at Iowa State through the 2025 season before finally jumping to Penn State. But can we all agree that getting Dan Campbell instead was the better outcome?

Dan Campbell has built something special in Detroit. His record sits at 48-36-1 with two playoff wins, and yeah, he started 4-19-1 in his first 24 games because this roster was held together with duct tape and false hope when he arrived. He got Detroit to the NFC Championship for the first time in three decades and set a franchise record with 15 wins in 2024.

He already ranks fourth in Lions coaching history in wins, just 18 behind Wayne Fontes, and his .571 win percentage also sits fourth all-time. Not bad for a guy who was supposedly the consolation prize.

Sometimes the best things happen when your first choice falls through. Matt Campbell’s cold feet turned into Detroit’s gain, and honestly, it’s hard to imagine this franchise culture being what it is under anyone else.

Would you trade Dan Campbell for Matt Campbell knowing what we know now, or are you glad Iowa State’s coach got spooked? Let me hear it in the comments.

Honestly this whole thing makes me love Dan even more knowing he wasn’t the first choice. Like he walked in and just decided to build something real here instead of just coasting. That’s the kind of energy this team needed and I’m so glad Matt Campbell got cold feet because our guy is different.

I mean yeah Dan’s done great things but let’s not act like we know what Campbell would’ve done here either. Different situation, different roster, different timeline. I’m happy with what we got but this whole thing still feels like we’re rewriting history a little bit to feel better about how it all went down.

You know what, after everything this franchise has been through over the decades, it’s just nice to see things work out for once. Dan’s brought a real culture shift and Brad’s built it right. It’s a different feeling than what we’ve had before and I’m not taking that for granted anymore.

This is wild timing to find out but honestly who cares now lol. Dan Campbell IS Detroit football right now and he’s got the respect of this entire team. Sometimes things work out exactly how they’re supposed to and this was one of those times.
