For Kelvin Sheppard’s defense, this is trial by fire. For Drew Petzing’s offense, it’s a stress test in one hell of a hostile environment. Win this game and you’re making a statement. Lose badly and the “same old Lions” whispers start early.
Week 7 vs. Green Bay: The Real Test
Four out of six writers picked this one, and honestly, they’re not wrong. Coming off the bye week at Ford Field against a Packers team that beat Detroit in both matchups in 2025? Yeah, this one matters.
The schedule makers did the Lions a favor with a relatively soft opening stretch, so a 4-1 start isn’t just possible, it’s expected. But Week 7 is where things get real in a hurry. The Packers kicked Detroit’s teeth in to open the year and then dominated them again on Thanksgiving, building multiple double-digit leads in front of a national audience.
Dan Campbell will have his team ready coming off the bye. After getting embarrassed by Minnesota coming out of the bye last year, you know this coaching staff understands what’s at stake. Win this game and move to 5-1? Now we’re talking about a legitimate deep playoff run. Lose it and suddenly those early wins don’t feel quite as impressive.
The Minnesota Problem
Week 8 brings the Vikings to town, and if we’re being honest, this might be the most telling game of all. Detroit’s worst two performances in 2025 came against Minnesota, and that’s not a coincidence.
Brian Flores has Dan Campbell’s number right now, and that’s a problem that needs solving. Can Drew Petzing’s offense finally crack the code? Can this retooled defense handle what Flores throws at them? This game will tell us whether the Lions learned from their mistakes or if they’re still searching for answers against quality opponents.
