Three Nightmare Stretches That Could Derail the Lions’ Season (And Why December Scares Us Most)

The Lions' schedule features three brutal stretches that could make or break their season, from early stumbles against weak teams to a December division road gauntlet that has fans already stressed.

The Lions’ Schedule Has Three Make-or-Break Stretches, and We’re Already Stressed About December

Here we are, deep in the offseason doldrums, counting down days until actual football returns to Ford Field. The schedule is out, and naturally, we’re all doing what Lions fans do best: finding reasons to worry about games that are still months away.

Our friends at Pride of Detroit broke down the most critical stretches of Detroit’s upcoming season, and honestly, there are enough pressure points on this schedule to give any rational Lions fan nightmares. Let’s dig into what has everyone circling dates on their calendars.

Detroit Lions Gear

The International Gauntlet: Weeks 10-12

Brandon Knapp identified the three-game stretch that has everyone talking: Patriots through Thanksgiving. This is brutal by design. The Patriots game will test the Lions against the defending AFC Champions, which sounds fun until you remember we’re still the Lions and big games make us nervous.

Then comes the real test: how does this team respond after playing overseas against Tampa Bay? International games are weird, the travel is exhausting, and then you get three days to prep for a Thanksgiving game against Chicago. If Detroit can win two of three here, that’s a victory. Anything less and we’re all going to be having very uncomfortable conversations during turkey dinner.

Set the Tone Early: Weeks 1-5

Ryan Mathews makes a compelling case for the season’s opening stretch. Detroit needs to take advantage of what looks like a favorable start to the schedule. We’re talking about a minimum of four wins in the first five games, and that’s being conservative.

Sure, losing to Buffalo in Week 2 wouldn’t be shocking. But dropping games against New Orleans, New York Jets, Carolina, or Arizona? Teams that combined for a 20-48 record in 2025? That’s the kind of thing that comes back to haunt you in January, assuming we make it that far.

This is where Brad Holmes’ roster construction gets put to the test early. The talent is there. The depth should be better. No excuses for stumbling out of the gate against inferior competition.

December Road Warriors: Weeks 15-18

Multiple staffers pointed to the season’s final stretch, and they’re absolutely right to be concerned. Three divisional road games in the final four weeks is a schedule maker’s cruel joke. Add in a Monday night game against the Giants at home, and you’ve got a month that will either validate everything Dan Campbell has built or expose the cracks we’re all pretending don’t exist.

This is where last season’s collapse becomes relevant context. The Lions went 2-4 in the division after going a combined 10-2 within the division over the previous two seasons. They looked lifeless in December when games mattered most. The final month of 2026 will determine whether that was an aberration or a pattern.

Division rivals Green Bay and Minnesota embarrassed Detroit last season. If this team wants to reclaim the NFC North crown, they’ll have to do it on the road when everything is on the line. No pressure, right?

The reality is this: the Lions should get out to a good start given the early schedule. They should build momentum and stack wins. But December road games in the division are where seasons are made or broken. Everything else is just setup for what happens when it gets cold and the stakes get real.

So which stretch has you most worried: the early soft schedule that could still trip us up, the international gauntlet right before Thanksgiving, or the December division road games that might determine everything? Drop your doomsday predictions below.

I’m not even worried about December yet honestly. If we take care of business early like we should against those weaker teams, we’ll have the confidence and cushion we need heading into the winter stretch. Holmes and Campbell have built something real here and I trust them to have this team ready when it matters.

Look, I want to believe but we’ve had talent before and found ways to mess it up. The international trip thing is legit annoying and three road division games to close it out? That’s the kind of schedule that can expose you fast if you’re not mentally locked in. Hoping the new regime has figured out what all the others couldn’t.

Man, I’ve seen so many December heartbreaks in my years watching this team that it’s hard not to be nervous. But I gotta say, the way Campbell carries himself and the way Holmes has built this roster feels different than anything I’ve seen since the old days. If anyone can get us through that final stretch it might actually be these guys.

The early schedule is a gift and we need to capitalize. Four wins in the first five games should be the floor, not the ceiling. This roster has the weapons and the coaching to dominate weaker competition and build real momentum.
