Seeing Caleb Williams on the cover of Madden NFL 2027 is about as appetizing as a deep dish pizza made with Velveeta. And yes, I know what you’re thinking. A Bears quarterback who had one decent season gets the cover while our guys are still waiting for their turn? Classic.
Look, I get the reasoning. Williams had an exciting season in 2025 and the league loves its shiny new quarterbacks. But it still stings when you remember we had back-to-back Lions on Madden covers not that long ago.
The Glory Days
Calvin Johnson graced the cover in 2013, followed by Barry Sanders for the 25th anniversary edition in 2014. Two Hall of Famers. Two legends who put this franchise on their backs when everything else was falling apart. Those were the days when EA Sports actually recognized what we had in the Motor City.
Both of those cases are sitting somewhere in my basement, probably next to my Matt Stafford jerseys and a collection of playoff hopes that never quite materialized. But hey, at least we had our moment.
The Next Lion Up
So who’s next? My gut says Jahmyr Gibbs, and here’s why.
Gibbs is primed for an absolutely monster year. Dan Campbell has already declared him the bellcow back, which means the training wheels are officially off. No more committee approach. No more splitting carries down the middle. This is Gibbs’ backfield now.
If the newly retooled offensive line clicks early in 2026, Gibbs should be in the conversation for Offensive Player of the Year. The speed is already there. The vision is already there. The only thing missing was volume, and Campbell just handed him the keys to the Ferrari.
The Madden cover loves explosive players who capture the imagination. Gibbs breaking off 80-yard touchdown runs in Honolulu Blue? That’s exactly the kind of highlight reel material that gets you on magazine covers and video game boxes.
Plus, let’s be honest. This franchise is overdue for some national recognition that doesn’t involve us being the punchline. A Madden cover would be a nice reminder that we actually have elite talent in Allen Park.
