The Giannis Trade Got Me Thinking About Something Truly Insane
The Miami Heat just traded their entire roster for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The NBA is a different world, sure, but it got me wondering about something I should not have wondered about. What would this trade look like if the Detroit Lions did it?
Let me be clear up front. This is not real. This will never be real. If Brad Holmes ever made this trade, he would be fired before the plane landed. But the Giannis deal was so absurd that I had to map it out for Detroit. And now I need to know if there is a single Lions fan out there willing to defend it.
Here Is What Milwaukee Got for Giannis
Tyler Herro. Kel’el Ware. Jaime Jaquez Jr. Kasparas Jakucionis. The No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033. A 2030 pick swap. A 2033 second-rounder.
In return, Miami got Giannis and Bobby Portis.
The Heat gutted their entire future for one superstar. Now let me do that to the Lions.
The Detroit Lions Version
Who is Detroit trading for? Let me pick a guy I get asked about constantly. Maxx Crosby. The Raiders edge rusher who has been linked to Detroit in every trade rumor and fan wishlist for the last three years. That is the Giannis part. For Bobby Portis, we will throw in Alex Cappa.
Now for what the Raiders would demand.
They are getting a Pro Bowl level player. An up-and-coming star. A couple of young pieces with upside. And all the draft capital you can stomach.
Detroit Lions Receive
Maxx Crosby
Alex Cappa
Las Vegas Raiders Receive
Brian Branch
Jameson Williams
Tyleik Williams
Tate Ratledge
A 2027 first-round pick
A 2029 first-round pick
A 2030 first-round pick
A 2031 second-round pick
Yeah, It Feels Wrong Because It Is
I know what you are thinking. You are thinking this is lunacy. You are thinking no GM in their right mind would trade Brian Branch plus Jameson Williams plus three first-round picks for an edge rusher and a guard.
You are right. Brad Holmes would not do this. Dan Campbell would not sign off on it. Sheila Ford Hamp would intervene before the paperwork was filed.
But the NBA just did it. They gave up everything for one guy. And I am genuinely curious if there is a Lions fan out there who will twist themselves into knots trying to justify this deal.
Because Maxx Crosby is damn good. And if you squint hard enough, you can convince yourself that one elite player is worth mortgaging the future. The problem is, this is not basketball. You cannot put one guy on the field and expect him to carry the entire defense. Football does not work that way. Detroit does not work that way. Not anymore.
So would you do it? Would you trade Brian Branch, Jameson Williams, three firsts, and two young defensive pieces for Maxx Crosby and Alex Cappa? Or are you smarter than that?
Tell me which one of you out there is willing to defend this trade in the comments. I need to know who among us has lost their mind.
