Day 3 Draft Targets: Brad Holmes’ Secret Weapon to Complete the Lions’ Championship Puzzle

The Lions head into Day 3 with Brad Holmes looking to continue his draft success, targeting key positions like quarterback depth, offensive line help, and defensive playmakers in the later rounds.

The Lions’ Draft Day 3 Big Board: Where Hope Meets Reality

Two days down, one to go. The Lions have already added Clemson tackle Blake Miller and Michigan edge rusher Derrick Moore to the roster, and now we get to the meat and potatoes of this draft. Day 3. Where Brad Holmes has historically found gold and where, let’s be honest, we’ve learned not to get too excited about anything until we see it in Honolulu Blue.

The bulk of Detroit’s picks sit in these later rounds. And if you’ve been following this team long enough, you know Day 3 is where championship rosters get built or where dreams go to die in Allen Park’s practice facility.

Trading Up in Round 4: The Tempting Targets

Holmes might get antsy and move up for a few specific players. DT Gracen Halton could be worth the extra capital if he’s sliding. Same goes for LB Kyle Louis, CB Kionte Scott, and S Zakee Wheatley. These aren’t household names, but neither was Kerby Joseph when we grabbed him.

The question becomes: do you burn assets to move up, or do you trust that value will fall to you? Given our recent track record, I’d lean toward letting the draft come to us.

Pick 118: The Sweet Spot of Expectations

This is where it gets interesting. At 118, the Lions could be looking at LSU QB Garret Nussmeier as a developmental backup. Running backs Nicholas Singleton, Emmet Johnson, and Jonah Coleman all offer different flavors of potential behind our current stable.

The offensive line depth includes Parker Brailsford and Connor Lew on the interior, while tackles like Isaiah World, Travis Burke, and Dametrious Crownover could provide swing tackle insurance. Because we all remember what happens when the injury bug hits our line.

Defensively, the options are deeper. Edge rushers Tyreak Sapp and Mikail Kamara could add pass rush depth. Linebackers Jimmy Rolder and Harold Perkins Jr. bring different skill sets. The secondary options include CBs Jadon Canady and Hezekiah Masses, plus safeties Jalon Kilgore and Michael Taafe.

Rounds 5-7: Where Diamonds Hide

Round 5 brings more quarterback options with Sawyer Robertson and Taylen Green. RB Kaytron Allen could be a late-round steal. The edge rusher class gets deeper with Caden Curry, Nadame Tucker, and Trey Moore all carrying potential.

Round 6 thins out considerably, but RBs J’Mari Taylor and Eli Heidenrreich might be worth a flyer. Round 7 gives us intriguing edge options like Logan Fano and Patrick Payton, plus CBs Ceyair Wright and Al’Zillion Hamilton (yes, that’s really his name).

The UDFA Pool: Where Hope Springs Eternal

The undrafted free agent class includes QBs Haynes King and Behren Morton, plus a collection of developmental pieces across multiple positions. These are the guys who might surprise everyone in training camp or disappear into football obscurity.

Look, we’ve been through enough drafts to know that big boards are just educated guesses dressed up in fancy charts. But Holmes has earned enough trust that we can look at this final day with cautious optimism instead of the dread that used to accompany Lions draft coverage.

The foundation is already built. Now it’s about adding the right pieces to keep this thing rolling. Day 3 might not be glamorous, but it’s where depth gets built and where championship dreams either get reinforced or exposed as fool’s gold.

Think Holmes nails another Day 3 masterclass or are we setting ourselves up for disappointment again? Drop your predictions below.
