FIFA Just Embarrassed the NFL Into Caring About Player Safety and It’s About Damn Time

Seven NFL stadiums are installing grass fields for the FIFA World Cup after 92% of players demanded safer playing surfaces over artificial turf that causes more injuries.

The World Cup is Forcing the NFL to Care About Player Safety Again

Seven NFL stadiums are ripping out their artificial turf and rolling out grass fields for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup kicking off next month. MetLife Stadium, AT&T Field, Gillette Stadium, Lumen Field, NRG Stadium, SoFi Stadium and Mercedes-Benz Stadium are all going green because FIFA doesn’t mess around with fake grass.

Here’s the thing. Players have been screaming about this for years.

Detroit Lions Gear

JC Tretter from the NFLPA says 92% of the 1,700 players they polled want grass over turf. Not 60%. Not 75%. Ninety-two percent. That’s not a preference, that’s a damn mandate from the people whose knees and ankles are getting destroyed on these synthetic surfaces.

“There is something about the feeling of being on grass, the body feels different,” Tretter said on the “Not Just Football” podcast. “I think if you ask the coaches, just standing on grass vs. standing on turf for three hours feels different. There is something there that impacts the body.”

FIFA Shows the NFL How It’s Done

Want to know what real leadership looks like? FIFA mandates grass surfaces and rolls out standards that every venue must meet. Period. End of discussion.

“You look at FIFA, they’re rolling out the green carpet for soccer players,” Tretter said. “Over in European leagues, that is what you do. You play on grass. They have surface standards that each thing is rolled out. It’s exactly how it’s supposed to be. And those players will not play if it’s not that.”

Meanwhile, half of NFL stadiums are still using variations of artificial turf because it’s cheaper to maintain. The league that prints money like it’s going out of style can’t be bothered to prioritize the surface their players destroy their bodies on.

The NFL and NFLPA did agree on new metrics for choosing field surfaces, but that’s just corporate speak for “we’ll study this to death while players keep getting hurt.”

Quick Hits Around the League

Speaking of things that make your head hurt, the NFL is stuffing even more games onto streaming services. Five regular-season games on Netflix now. Because apparently watching football wasn’t complicated enough already.

Former Lions tight end Shane Zylstra found a new home with a team Detroit faces in 2026. The revenge game narratives write themselves.

The Lions are getting a new alternate uniform in 2026 as part of Nike’s Rivalries Collection. Rod Wood says it’s “consistent with our color and look, but with a little modern twist.” Translation: it’s probably going to be fine but we’re all going to argue about it anyway.

And here’s a fun fact for the road warriors: Detroit sports fans can catch both the Tigers in Toronto and the Lions in Buffalo on the same weekend in September. Toronto to Buffalo is about two hours, so pack accordingly.

Do you think the NFL will actually keep the grass surfaces after the World Cup or go right back to prioritizing profit margins over player safety? Drop your prediction below.

Finally someone calling out how ridiculous this is. Our guys have been begging for real grass and it takes FIFA showing up to make the NFL actually listen? Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes are building something real here and they deserve an organization that actually puts player safety first. Grass fields for 2026 needs to be the permanent move not just temporary.

I want to believe this sticks around after the World Cup but come on, we’ve seen this movie before. These are the same people who will cut corners the second FIFA leaves town. Hope I’m wrong but I’m not holding my breath on permanent change.

You know back in the day we didn’t have all these fancy fake surfaces and somehow guys still played great football. The fact that it takes a soccer tournament to get the NFL’s attention on something this basic just shows how much has changed and not always for the better. At least Holmes and Campbell seem to actually care about doing things the right way.

92 percent of players want grass and that wasn’t enough? That number should’ve been game over years ago. The league needs to stop treating player safety like it’s negotiable.
