Dream Big or Go Home: What’s the Perfect Round 1 Move for Detroit?
Two days. That’s all that stands between us and another Brad Holmes draft masterclass, and honestly, the pressure has never been higher in Allen Park. With the budget tightening and that Super Bowl window doing what Lions windows do best (threatening to slam shut), Holmes needs to nail this weekend harder than a Honolulu Blue sledgehammer.
The math is simple and brutal. Holmes must use this draft to acquire at least two or three starting players who will give this team production and great value over the next four years. No pressure, right?
Here’s the thing about Holmes though. The man is dealing with less draft capital than he’s used to having, but his reputation as a college evaluator speaks for itself. Plus, we all know he loves moving around the board like he’s playing 4D chess while everyone else is still figuring out checkers.
The Dream That Makes Too Much Sense
So what’s the dream scenario for Round 1? Trading down and snagging Clemson offensive tackle Blake Miller.
Now hold on. Before you start typing angry comments about how we need an edge rusher or whatever, remember this is a dream scenario. We have no clue what NFL front offices think of Miller, but there’s speculation they’re higher on him than the media.
The media has Miller ranked 32nd on Wide Left’s consensus big board, which combines data from 110 analysts. But if the NFL sees something different? That’s where Holmes could work his magic.
Picture this: Detroit moves down from pick 17, maybe 5-8 spots, and nets an extra third-round pick. You know, those picks we threw away in aggressive trade up for Isaac TeSlaa. A move down 10+ spots could give them a bounty of picks.
The beauty is getting an immediate starting left tackle while also restocking the draft capital cabinet. It’s the kind of move that makes you feel smart about supporting this team for all these years.
Reality Check Time
Of course, this is pure fantasy football. We don’t know if Miller would still be available 10 spots later. We sure as hell don’t know if there’s a team willing to jump that far up to give the Lions the pick bounty they desperately need.
But that’s what makes it a dream scenario, right? Sometimes the stars align. Sometimes Brad Holmes finds a way to make magic happen on a weekend in late April.

Ok I’m all in on this Blake Miller dream because honestly we need that left side protection and getting extra picks back would be chef’s kiss. Brad Holmes has shown he knows how to work the board so why not let the man cook? This is the kind of move that could actually set us up for the long haul.
Look I want to believe this but we’ve been down this road before with the draft being our salvation and it never quite works out like we hope. Two or three starters from one draft class? That’s asking for the lottery. I’ll believe it when I see it on the field.
The thing about Holmes is he’s got that chess player mentality and I respect that. Back in the day we needed guys who could think like that and it didn’t always happen. If he can pull off a move like this I’m here for it, just don’t want to see another reach at 17 like some of the moves I’ve watched over the years.
This feels right to me. We need immediate help and we need depth in the pipeline. Trading down for Miller AND getting picks back is literally the perfect scenario. Holmes knows talent when he sees it so I’m gonna ride with this optimism going into Saturday.
